The Lincoln House in Dennysville, Maine:

( 3 minute drive from Dennysville Narrows Cottage and Cabin )

The Lincoln House was the first house built in Dennysville. (James and Joshia Chubbuck, Narrows Cottage owner Pam's relatives worked as carpenters on the Lincoln House!)  More recently, it was an Inn for over 20 years and is now open as a restaurant on weekends and providing folks a place to socialize.   This is a real treat!   Offering simple meals in a fabulous setting, and within walking distance of the narrows property (about 2.5 miles)!!  Owners Jon and Melinda Jaques are wonderful!  Great conversation!  And ask Melinda - she is an expert on the area's history!  Located on Main Street - magestic yellow/ gold house - you can't miss it!

The Lincoln House is on the national register of Historical Places.  General Benjamin Lincoln received the sword of surrender at Yorktown. In 1786 he and two other men purchased the township. The House was built (1787) for General Lincoln's son, Theodore, who settled here in 1786. Three generations of Lincoln's lived here. The family was well-known for its hospitality. John James Audubon was among the many visitors at the Lincoln House.

Quoddy Head State Park in Lubec, Maine:

( 25 minute drive from Dennysville Narrows Cottage and Cabin)

Quoddy Head State Park is located four miles off Maine Route 189 in Lubec on the easternmost point of land in the United States.  On its 532 acres, puchased by the state in 1962, the park features 4.5 miles of hiking trails,  extensive forests, two bogs, diverse habitat for rare plants, and the striking, red-and-white strped lighthouse tower of West Quoddy Head Light.  With its diverse landscape, breathtaking views, scenic picnic sites, and opportunities for hiking and whale watching, Quoddy Head State park is a fun and fascinating destination for visitors to down east Maine.

In 1808, West Quoddy Head Light became the easternmost lighthouse in the United States. Its light and fog cannon warned mariners of Quoddy's dangerous cliffs, ledges, and Sail Rock. Among the first to use a fog bell and later a steam-powered foghorn, this lighthouse greatly reduced shipwrecks in this foggy area, even as shipping increased. In 1858, the present red-and-white tower replaced the original. Monitored and serviced by the U. S. Coast Guard, its light still shines through its original third-order Fresnel lens. After automation in 1988, the light station became part of adjacent Quoddy Head State Park. The tower is closed, but visitors are welcome to enjoy the lighthouse grounds and explore the Visitor Center and Museum run by the West Quoddy Head Light Keepers' Association.

"Chocolate Town" in St Stephens, British Columbia, Canada:

( 30 minute drive (depending on border crossing) from Dennysville Narrows Cottage and Cabin )

Right across the border from Calais, Maine is "Chocolate Town", complete with "Chocolate Museum".    Brothers James and Gilbert Ganong grew up in rural New Brunswick where their father farmed and kept a general store. Some years after leaving home to pursue separate careers, they decided to move to St. Stephen and go into business together.  In 1873 they opened their own grocery store and, when it almost failed, they added candy - then a specialty item - to the list of wares for sale. Meeting with success, they started to make their own candy to sell in the store.  From this modest beginning, Ganong Bros. Ltd. grew dramatically. By 1930 the company was a major corporation employing 700 people.  Check out www.chocolatemuseum.ca for more information.  The Chocolate Museum tells the story of candy-making in St. Stephen - through chocolate-making demonstrations, hands-on exhibits, interactive computer displays, candy-making equipment, and a unique collection of chocolate boxes.  Tour the museum (yes, you get a chocolate treat!) or take the "heritage chocolate walk" around historic St Stephens and get even more chocolate!

Visit the Ganong Nature Park at Todd's Point  and explore 330 acres of intertidal lands, fields, and woodlands.  Here there are a wide range of paths for both the avid hiker and casual walker.  Here you will see scenic wooded areas, creeks, rustic wooden bridges, picnic shelters.  Bike along the water's edge or kayak/ canoe (with or without a guide) along Passamaquoddy Bay's coastline.  Find more pictures here.

Also in St Stephens are plenty of shops along the water and other touristy type things to do.  A terrific day trip!
